Do you know that sway back posture is a very commonly searched term on the internet?
I’m trying more and more to find out what topics interest my readers the most, and provide you with FREE, QUALITY information, that would otherwise cost you money, time, and energy to learn about. So consider my blog a one-stop-shop.
Today, I am going to write about
”SWAY BACK POSTURE”
When I review my blog statistics, the most common concern, question, and searched term that brings you to my site it the term SWAY BACK. Some people also spell it this swayback as one word.
So, what exactly is SWAY BACK POSTURE? Let’s Start with a picture that gives you a visual as to what it may look like shall we.
Whenever I go over an X-ray with a patient, or we evaluate their posture, I always ask for the patients observations and feedback first. I do this for several reasons.
Number 1, I am a true believer that patients know their bodies better then any health care provider, so they tend to have an inner sense as to what and where the specific problem or ailment is, and as such, they will be in the “ballpark” as to what the observe or provide in feedback.
Number 2, it is the “gross” (not disgusting, but major observation) finding that typically jumps of the page and highlights the main finding.
So when you look at the picture I’ve provided, what are the things that jump out at you???
If you say the pendulous abdomen you’d be correct. By that, I mean to say the “low-hanging” belly, that almost looks like if someone you knew was pregnant, and the baby ”dropped” to prepare itself for delivery.
If you noticed the tilting of the pelvis in forward direction, you would also be correct.
If you happened to observed the way the neck protrudes forward, that too would be a glaring detail that DOES jumps out.
Lastly, if you said the way the middle back “sways” backwards, well, you’d be correct as well.
So the correct answer to the question “What is sway back posture“? ……all of them.
What exactly is sway back posture?
How can the postural faults listed above ALL be “Sway Back”?
I would answer all of them because your spine compensate in a very characteristic manner. The repetitive stress that our bodies go through on a daily basis, causes the normal curvatures in our spines to succumb to the affects of gravity.
What is the result?
If you think about the downward force of gravity, we too are pulled downwards, resulting in all of the above postural changes that we just mentioned.
When they are all added together All added together, you’ve created the typical “sway back posture”.
How can I fix my sway back posture?
That’s a question that I get asked by my patient’s very often. I tell them that I’ll tell you.
The goods news is that with the right exercises, we can correct the changes that have occurred in your spine. Check out this video for learning the best exercises to correct the Sway Back Posture.
I hope you find it helpful.
Again, do the sway back exercises slowly, 3 sets of 5 reps, and try to do that 3-5 x throughout the day. All should help to fix your sway back.
Once you practice doing these say back posture exercises, you will start becoming what I call “posture-ly aware”.
Think about when you are sitting doing work at home, or in the office while on the computer. If you still live in the dark ages you may not do this, but I’d be willing to be that you have some direct one-on-one contact with the computer.
If you a not “posture-ly aware” you won’t realize that your sway back posture is starting to kick in.
If you are “posture-ly aware” you WILL realize that sway back posture is kicking in.
Think about the exercises you have learned to help correct the sway back posture, and do them in the seated position. Make sure you are aware of the tilting of the pelvis forward and backwards, and the effect that has on the rest of you spine.
Feels how it feels to have the noticeably downward posture. IF you think of it, if frozen into that posture, it really is pretty crappy posture.
With that in mind, get used to how it feels to have to try to keep this good posture. This is becoming posture-ely aware.
The great news about be-coming postural aware, pretty soon, it becomes much easier to hold this new, corrected posture.
What even better, when you become more and more posture-ely aware, you can apply it to most all sitting you find yourself in. Whether you are working in the office, on the computer at home, sitting at the table for dinner. All well eliminate the dreaded sway back posture.
So like anything else in the world, if you want to have a permanent solution to a short-term problem, the solution will involve “awareness” of the problem, when it is occurring, and the solution for preventing it from occurring in the first place.
This solution is always a life-style change.
In the case of sway-back posture, it’s not like your doing a “radical” life style changes per se.
But from the aspect that you are always aware of your posture while doing an extended task (whether it be standing will cooking, in a line, or sitting at the dinner table), and your muscles have been conditioned to hold a new and corrected posture, it becomes second nature.
When this happens, you’ll be much happier about any old sway back posture you may have ben familiar with.
